Did you know that all waste water pumps work following the same principle? With the help of a suction opening, the machine takes in water and then pump water to a higher area using a hose). There are different varieties of waste water pumps available in the market. And, you need to be very cautious while choosing the waste water pump for you!

Have a look at top things to consider while buying waste water pumps-

Maximum Discharge Head: Waste water pumps are utilized to transfer liquids from a lower to a higher area. The difference in height of the pump can easily be managed but it is always being limited at a certain level. The maximum discharge head helps you in describing this difference.

Size of the Inlet: The size of the intel is directly related to the time required to fill the tank. A characteristic pump has an inlet size which ranges from 1” to 5”. All centrifugal pumps work on the same principle. It sucks in water through the inlet valve and releases it from the discharge valve. The greater the size of the inlet, the quicker the pump will transfer the water through it.

Discharge Rate: The discharge rate indicates how much water the pump can move per hour or per minute. This value provides you the power level of the pump. It’s crucial to think about the discharge rate you’ll require for what you want to utilize the pump to undertake.

Head and Pressure: This is perhaps the most important aspect to consider while buying a pump. The maximum head of a pump refers to the combination of maximum suction height and maximum pumping height.

Connecting Hose Size: The submersible pump requires to be connected to a hose which will transport water away from the pump. There are lots of different hose sizes you might use for different applications.

Sewage Pumps| Benefits | Maintenance and Repairs

How Does a Sewage Pump Work?

A sewage pump transfers sewage solids and liquids from one place to another. When it comes to residential, sewage composes of soft solids that have a diameter of up to 2 inches. The sewage is propelled from the sewage basin to a septic tank or a sewer system.

Sewage Submersible Pumps

The sewage pump is set up at the lowest point of your sewage basin. The pump is usually submerged in most cases; therefore, the reason as to why it is referred to as submersible sewage pump. When it comes to sewage pump, it can be manual, dual mode or an automatic one.

Benefits of sewage pumps

Sewage pumps are to get rid of water build-up from the crawlspace and the basement, safely depositing it using the wastewater system of your home. The sump pump has a complicated installation although they are relatively simple. The following composes of some of the major benefits of sewage pumps:

  • Reduces the threat of mildew and molds. This happens due to the continual dampness of the inside of your basement due to stagnant pools, which contribute to the growth of mildew and molds. The molds and mildew pose health problems and damage your building material.
  • Prevent damages due to flooding that is because of heavy rains, which triggers your basement to flood. With a sump pump, you can be able to avoid disasters that occur due to flooding in the basement.
  • Reduces the risk of fire, water short-circuits appliances in your basement, for instance, the water heaters, heating system, and the laundry machines. Consequently, water is able to start a fire which is very dangerous and disastrous. With a sump pump, you can be able to keep water away from equipment that can cause fires in your house.

Maintenance and repairs of sewage pump.

Removing the cover, there are three different types of lids which have different methods of removal.

Install a ground fault circuit interrupter in the electric panel or at the outlet. It’s important that you ensure it is working. Use the test button to ensure that there is proper ground-fault protection.

Check the drain line that is from the pump until the line meets the air gap, check for any signs of holes, leaks, damages or corrosion.

Check the pit for debris or silt which can clog or obstruct the float discharge tube or pump impeller.

Ensure that the air gap that is between the interior and exterior discharge pipes are clear and open from debris.

What is sewage water and what are the different types of sewage?

Sewage water is wastewater from people living in a community. It is the water released from households after use for various purposes like washing dishes, laundry, and flushing the toilet, thus the name wastewater. The used water moves from the houses through pipes installed during plumbing. The sewage water then moves into sewers, either constructed by the house owner, or into a sewer facility set up by the municipality.

Sewage Pumps

Mostly, sewage water consists of grey water and black water. Grey water is the waste water from washing either from bathing, dishes or laundry. Black water is the waste water from toilets. It is characterized by debris such as paper wrappings, sanitary products, soap residues, and dirt due to the chemical composition of the various waste materials. Plus, sewage water has a foul smell.

There are two types of sewage: treated and untreated.

Treated sewage:

Treated sewage refers to wastewater or sewage which has passed through a treatment plant. Sewage goes through several stages in the treatment process ensuring that all harmful bacteria, pollutants and contaminants are eliminated. The stages of sewage treatment include pre-treatment, primary, secondary and tertiary sewage treatment. The last stage usually involves the use of UV light to ensure all bacteria and/or viruses are removed. After treatment, the water will usually pass into rivers or seas or be reused for irrigation and agricultural purposes.

Coming into contact with treated sewage is rare, but can arise if large flooding events affect sewage treatment plants or in very rare cases there is a pump or other equipment failure that results in wastewater spreading over land and potentially into property.

Untreated sewage:

Untreated sewage refers to wastewater which contains harmful waterborne pathogens and bacteria and which has not yet gone through a sewage treatment plant. Raw sewage originates from broken toilet pipes, overspills, industry leakages and heavy storms. It poses an extremely high risk to human and animal health and the longer it sits and stagnates a home or a business, the greater amount of bacteria it will contain.

Quite often, in the poorer areas of the world, sewage can get dumped anywhere and this is unfortunate as people have no access to proper treatment plants, therefore increasing health risks in those areas.

Darling Dewatering Pumps and Their Application

Dewatering is no more about removing excess water from one place or another, it has lot of other challenges like dewatering sites are generally open to sky, prone to large amount of mud & debris & are often unmanned. Dewatering Pumps need to be moved to multiple locations & thus need to be easily portable. Pumps movement, fitment & electrical connections are often done by unskilled labourer & thus pumps are prone to damage during its movement or faulty electrical connections.

Dewatering Submersible Pumps

Many a times due to ignorance, omission or un foreseen emergency pumps are put in to operation directly on main supply without using control panel in between. Due to this, pumps are generally exposed to erratic power supply, whether used on electrical supply or supply through genset. Due to all these uncertainties site engineers have to live with frequent breakdown of pump sets due to dry running, single phasing or mechanical jamming.

Factors Affecting the Choice of Dewatering Pump

Dewatering is extremely vital when constructing buildings, powerhouse and dams. Having firm and sound working conditions is indispensable. These structures not only require a dry base for their foundations but also a good water-table-stability in the girth. Although dewatering can be done by techniques such as gravity flow and electro-osmosis, the use of dewatering pumps is the most convenient, efficient and fastest in yielding satisfactory results.

Whatever the application, there are a number of factors that have an impact on the choice of dewatering pump:

Solids content – The water that collects during mine production, construction or from flooding is not clean and contains solids. The solid content varies greatly from application to application. Generally, floodwaters have a much lower solid content than the water that collects in mining or construction operations. Solids cause abrasive wear in pumps. In the harsh conditions prevalent in the construction and mining industries, dewatering pumps need to be robust enough to withstand abrasion. Centrifugal pumps, with their low tolerances, are particularly prone to abrasive wear and will require a high level of maintenance. Ideally, pumps with better abrasive wear resistance should be chosen for these applications.

Water pH – Depending on the quality of groundwater seeping into working areas, the water that needs to be extracted may be acidic. Mine water in particular has high acidity which can cause significant pump corrosion. Dewatering pump selection must take the acidity of the water into account. High acidity may demand a pump made from a material that has high corrosion resistance, like stainless steel and other steel alloys.

Solid material – In any flooding or water collection scenario there is always the possibility of solid material being present in the water. This makes it impossible for pumps with low tolerances to operate efficiently. Any pump selected should have sufficient tolerance to be able to handle solid material. Centrifugal pumps are generally not suitable for this purpose due to solids that could be present which could potentially clog the pump.
