What Is A Dewatering Pump?

Reduce Clogs With A Proper Wastewater Pump Design

There are heavy amounts of rags and/or other stringy materials present in many wastewater applications. In this writing piece,  the basics of a wastewater pump design are explained. Also, the elements of the pump that greatly affect the provision of a clog-resistant wastewater pump are elaborated.

The concentration of solids has become higher in wastewater

With the increase in the world’s population, the demand for water has also increased. While there are many initiatives helping in decreasing the amount of water used at each individual water connection, they do not help in decreasing the quantity of clog-causing material and rags that go into wastewater systems. Due to a decrease in the amount of water accompanying the solids, the concentration percentage of solids in wastewater has increased. Therefore the pumps have been clogging more frequently every year. Detection of a clog and reversing the direction of the pump to clear it is possible because of the commercially available electronic control systems. However, there are pump designs that avoid clogging and run efficiently without clog-clearing controls being needed.

Proper pump design helps in decreasing clogging

First, one should consider where the clogs start. The stringy materials usually get caught in two main locations. When one of the rags gets caught, it collects others. This finally leads to a complete or partial clog. 

The first location is the impeller vane’s tip. This tip is the first component that is in moving and that the water touches. If it protrudes into the fluid path, it catches rags, and a clog is created. A design with enclosed impellers, serrated wear plates, and shoulders at the suction of the pump should be the way to go. 

The second location is on the impeller vane’s leading edge. Although more vanes mean higher efficiency, it also means more chances of clogging. Because rags get squeezed through smaller passages. Additionally, more vanes get passed through the impeller’s eye and into the path of possible clogs. The single-vane pumps consist of only one passage through the pump. This means that the stringy materials like rags which may get caught on the leading edge will be pulled off the vane and go back into the flow stream, as there is flowing water in this single passage.
