Slurry is a mixture of solids and liquid, generally water. The particles can be both abrasive & nonabrasive, although abrasive particles are very much common. The purpose to move slurry can be transporting as much solids particles as possible, hydraulically, along with the given liquid.
Below are Common Characteristics of Slurries:
- Abrasive
- Thick consistency
- Can contain a high amount of solids
- Usually settle quickly
Slurry Types
Slurry can be further classified in to two types
Type 1: Settling Slurry
Type 2: Non-Settling Slurry
Settling slurries are formed by coarse particles that tend to form an unstable mixture. Particular attention should be given to flow and power calculations when selecting a pump. The majority of slurry applications are made up of coarse particles and because of this, have higher wear properties.
Non-settling slurries often have high viscosities and small particles, so they flow differently than settling slurries; there is much less segregation of the particles, and the particle concentration within the pipeline is nearly constant, or homogeneous.
Choosing the right pumps for specific slurries can help pump owners avoid unnecessary maintenance, repairs, and related downtime. In addition, proper pump applications make for safer work environments, offering those working on or around pumps peace of mind. Perhaps best of all, purpose-chosen slurry pumps also have longer wear lives, boosting owners’ bottom lines.
Some of the important parameters of slurries to consider when selecting a pump include:
- Particle size, shape (angular, round, long and stringy) and hardness
- Corrosiveness
- Chemical compatibility with elastomer
- Solids concentration
- Likelihood of running dry
In case of slurry pumping, it is important to note that standard pump selection fundamentals might not stand true. Having set – rigid solutions for all type of slurries is just an eye wash.
